A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Nyesom Wike has taken control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja following the unsealing of the premises by the Nigeria Police Force.
The development comes amid a prolonged internal leadership crisis that has divided the party into rival camps. The dispute previously erupted into open confrontation at the PDP’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, in November, when opposing factions clashed over control of party structures.
Confirming the latest takeover in a statement issued on Saturday, the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed said the police action complied with valid court orders. The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed.
According to the faction, both the Wadata Plaza secretariat and Legacy House in Maitama have now been formally handed over to the leadership under Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
The group commended the police for what it described as professionalism and respect for due process, noting that the move reinforces adherence to constitutional order.
It also issued a stern warning against any attempt to disrupt activities at the secretariat, stressing that security agencies have been placed on alert to deal with potential violators.
“This development signals that the recent challenges within the party have been effectively addressed,” the statement noted, urging aggrieved members to embrace reconciliation and unity.
The faction further acknowledged the support of party stakeholders during the crisis, singling out Wike for what it described as his “guidance and commitment.”
The internal rift within the PDP had deepened after a disputed national convention held in Ibadan by a rival faction backed by Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed. However, the Court of Appeal ruled in March in favour of the Wike-backed camp, nullifying the outcome of that convention.
With control of the national secretariat now secured, the Wike-aligned leadership says it is focused on stabilizing the party and consolidating its structures ahead of future political engagements.
