Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has alleged that his former deputy, Aminu Abdussalam, attempted to orchestrate his removal in a bid to take over the state’s leadership.
Yusuf made the claim while hosting a group of praise singers, Mawallafan Abba Gida Gida, at the Government House in Kano. He maintained that he had no prior knowledge of any formal resignation from Abdussalam and questioned the circumstances surrounding his exit from office.
The former deputy governor recently resigned and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), at a time when the Kano State House of Assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against him. However, lawmakers later halted the process shortly after his resignation.
Reacting to the development, Yusuf said his administration had not taken any action that would justify Abdussalam’s decision to step down. He suggested that the move was part of a failed attempt to unseat him.
According to the governor, “the deputy governor who was elected alongside us is no longer part of this government,” adding that he had not even seen a resignation letter to confirm Abdussalam’s exit.
Yusuf further claimed that the former deputy’s actions were driven by ambition to occupy the governorship, but insisted that such efforts did not succeed.
The governor also raised concerns about Abdussalam’s treatment within the Kwankwasiyya political movement, questioning why he was allegedly denied the opportunity he is now seeking elsewhere. He described the situation as potentially unfair, noting that the circumstances surrounding the former deputy’s political aspirations remain unclear.
