The Federal Government has announced plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s teaching and learning processes to improve the quality of education across all levels.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a ministerial briefing held on Friday to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Education. The theme for this year’s celebration is “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

Speaking through the Director of Polytechnics at the Ministry, Dr. Ejeh Usman, Alausa emphasized the importance of harnessing AI’s potential while maintaining the critical role of educators.

“As we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI), it is crucial that we prioritize human agency in education,” the Minister stated. “We must ensure that AI enhances, rather than replaces, educators’ vital role in shaping young minds.”

He highlighted the government’s vision of integrating AI into the education sector to empower students for a world increasingly dominated by automation.

“Our vision is to harness the potential of AI to augment teaching and learning while safeguarding the unique qualities that make us human. We aim to create an education system that seamlessly integrates AI, empowering students to thrive in a world where automation is increasingly prevalent,” Alausa added.

The Minister further outlined several AI-driven initiatives already underway to support teachers and students.

“We have Inspire for students, which brings the classroom closer, while Ignite for teachers helps educators put lesson plans together,” he explained. “The Tertiary Information System (TIS) portal has been developed to house the data of undergraduates in tertiary institutions as part of our data digitalization efforts.”

He also highlighted the Nigeria Learning Passport, an initiative designed to provide free online access to over 15,000 learning materials for primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary students across the country.

Additionally, the government has automated the processes of evaluating and accrediting academic records to make them more efficient. “The digitalization of these services makes the process less cumbersome and aligns with global best practices,” Alausa noted.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with international partners, education experts, and educators to develop a robust framework for the integration of AI into the education system.

“We are ready to establish an AI in Education Task Force to develop guidelines and standards for teacher training,” he announced.

The Federal Government’s move to incorporate AI into the education system is expected to revolutionize the sector, providing innovative tools and resources to enhance learning outcomes while preparing students for the challenges of a technologically advanced world.
