The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the root causes of ongoing protests, specifically hunger and the high cost of living.
Dr. Charles Ugwuanyi, the Chairman of the NMA FCT branch, emphasized the need for immediate action to make the economy more manageable for citizens.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, Ugwuanyi highlighted that the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests are driven by widespread public dissatisfaction. He pointed out that the severe economic hardship in the country has led many citizens to view protests as a necessary means to express their frustration.
“In recent times, President Tinubu’s desire to rescue the country from numerous issues has resulted in severe hardship for Nigerians,” Ugwuanyi stated.
“Despite the President’s efforts to address the country’s challenges, many Nigerians continue to suffer from hunger and harsh living conditions, leading to widespread public dissatisfaction.”
He noted that the dire economic situation is prompting many to protest, which also poses a threat to national security. Ugwuanyi called on the government to prioritize addressing hunger and the high cost of food. “The President should address these challenges and other economic issues, such as the cost of fuel, which is causing significant pain for the people,” he said.
The NMA Chairman underscored the President’s duty to make the economy more conducive for Nigerians. “We are calling on the President to make the economy friendly so that Nigerians will be able to put food on their tables,” he concluded.
