The 2024 Olympics International Organizing Committee (IOC) has issued an apology for mistakenly introducing the South Korean athletes as North Koreans during the opening ceremony of the event in Paris on Friday, July 26.

The error occurred as the South Korean delegation made its entrance, parading down the Seine River, only to be announced with the official name of North Korea, leading to significant embarrassment.

In response to the mistake, the IOC promptly issued apologies. The South Korean sports ministry also expressed regret and sought a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach to address the incident.

“We deeply apologize for the mistake that occurred when introducing the South Korean team during the broadcast of the opening ceremony,” the IOC stated in a post on its official Korean-language X account.

Additionally, the South Korean foreign ministry contacted the French embassy in Seoul to convey their dissatisfaction with what they termed an “incomprehensible mistake.”

The South Korean National Olympic Committee plans to file a formal protest and request measures to prevent such errors in the future, underscoring the seriousness of the incident. In contrast, North Korea was correctly introduced during the ceremony.

The error comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two Koreas. North Korea has been strengthening its military ties with Russia and has reportedly been sending balloons carrying trash into South Korea. In retaliation, South Korea has been broadcasting K-pop and anti-regime messages from border loudspeakers and conducting live fire drills near the demilitarized zone.

The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing complexities and sensitivities in the relationship between North and South Korea, highlighting the need for careful diplomatic handling during international events.
