The Nigerian passport has been ranked the 10th worst travel document in the world, according to the VisaGuide World Passport Index.

As of April 2024, the Nigerian passport was positioned at 191 out of 199 countries, ranking above only eight countries.

The report indicated that the Nigerian passport was placed higher than passports from North Korea (192), Iraq (193), Libya (194), Sudan (195), Pakistan (196), Afghanistan (197), Syria (198), and Somalia (199).

The VisaGuide World Passport Index is a passport ranking system that assesses and ranks passports of countries and territories using the Destination Significance Score (DSS).

The latest index ranked the Singaporean passport as the strongest in the world, followed by the Italian passport. Spanish, French, and German passports were ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

According to the report, the DSS value assigned to each destination is based on factors such as entry policy, GDP, Power Index, Tourism Index, and Human Development Index (HDI).

Factors such as visa-free travel, electronic travel authorization, visa on arrival, electronic visa (e-visa), embassy or other government-approved visas, passport-free travel, and banned entry are also considered.

The report highlighted that each passport is assigned a unique value, determined by multiplying the DSS with the value of the visa requirement of the destination country.

It emphasized that being able to travel visa-free to a destination with a higher DSS gives the selected passport a higher value.

After all calculations, each passport is assigned a unique value, with no two countries having the same number of “visa-free” destinations.
