Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic collapse of a school building in Busa Buji village, Jos, Plateau State.

The incident, which occurred while students were in the midst of their exams, has resulted in at least 16 deaths, with many others, including teachers, trapped under the rubble.

In his heartfelt condolence message on Friday, Obi conveyed his profound sadness over the unfortunate event. “I am disheartened by the heartbreaking reports of the unfortunate collapse of a school building in Busa Buji village, Jos, Plateau State, today, which has left at least 16 of our children dead, and many others, including teachers, trapped under the rubble,” he stated.

Obi empathized with the students and their families, acknowledging the trauma they must be experiencing. “The incident occurred while the school was in session and students were writing their exams. I can only imagine the trauma of these young ones, sadly, witnessing such a tragic occurrence, and even their parents, who are undoubtedly worried about the safety of the children.”

The former governor of Anambra State praised the swift response of rescue operations and thanked the various organizations involved. “I understand that rescue operations began in full swing. I thank various organizations, including the FRSC, NEMA, Red Cross, Army, Police, and many other individuals helping out with the safe rescue of our children and their teachers,” he said.

Obi also called on the Plateau State government to conduct thorough investigations to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent future occurrences. “I sympathize with the Government and People of Plateau State, the management, staff, and students of the school, and the families of all the victims affected. I also call on the government to carry out deep investigations into this tragic incident to unravel the causes and help prevent further occurrences around the country. My sincere prayers are with the remaining trapped children and teachers for their safe rescue,” he added.
