The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a cautionary alert to Nigerians concerning the impending heavy rainfall expected on Thursday, September 28, and Friday, September 29. This weather event is anticipated to affect twenty-five states across the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with a significant risk of flash floods.

NiMet has identified the following states as those likely to experience heavy rainfall: Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Abia.

In addition to these states, NiMet has projected that Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue States, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will also witness moderate to heavy rainfall during this period. Conversely, other regions of the country are expected to have very light or no rainfall at all.

The agency has underscored the potential dangers associated with this weather pattern, especially the threat posed by strong winds to vulnerable structures, trees, and communication masts. NiMet advises residents in the affected states to take precautions, such as disconnecting electrical appliances before the onset of rains.

NiMet’s warning emphasizes the likelihood of flash flooding in the areas where heavy rainfall is expected. Furthermore, they caution that strong winds accompanying the rains will be most pronounced over parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi states.

In light of these weather conditions, NiMet has advised the public, particularly drivers, against attempting to drive through surface runoff waters, which may have strong undercurrents. Hazards such as slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during heavy rainfall could disrupt road traffic. It is strongly recommended that individuals refrain from driving through surface water to ensure their safety and that of others.

NiMet’s proactive weather warnings are crucial for public safety, and residents in the affected regions are urged to heed these advisories and take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their property during this period of adverse weather conditions.
