The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to clarify key issues surrounding the nomination of candidates by political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission is expected to address the concerns on Tuesday as part of efforts to provide clarity on its preparations for the forthcoming elections.
The Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to Oketola, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, will lead a press briefing to provide updates on several aspects of the electoral process, including voter registration, candidate nominations and election logistics.
He said the briefing would “provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.”
The planned engagement comes amid questions arising from a recent Supreme Court judgment concerning political party membership and the nomination of candidates under the 2026 Electoral Act.
INEC said the briefing would also provide an opportunity for engagement with major stakeholders involved in the electoral process, describing the initiative as part of its commitment to transparency and effective communication.
The commission stated that the engagement “underlines the Commission’s commitment to absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem.”
Political party leaders, security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations, election observer groups and disability rights advocates are expected to attend.
Religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives are also listed among the stakeholders expected at the event.
The commission noted that October 6, 2026, will mark 100 days to the 2027 general elections, adding significance to the planned briefing as preparations for the polls intensify.
