The Kano State Government has suspended all Durbar processions and horse-riding activities within the Kano metropolis until further notice, citing security concerns.
The decision was reached by the State Security Council during an emergency meeting held at the Government House, Kano, where officials reviewed the security situation surrounding the planned activities.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the government said the suspension was a precautionary measure aimed at preventing possible clashes and protecting lives and property.
According to the statement, security agencies had reported a significant mobilisation of supporters ahead of the planned activities, raising concerns about a possible confrontation.
“The State Security Council resolved to take precautionary measures to prevent any possible confrontation, preserve public order, and avoid any potential loss of lives or damage to property,” the statement said.
The government said the council subsequently directed the suspension of the Durbar processions and horse-riding activities across the metropolis as part of measures to safeguard public safety.
It also ordered relevant security agencies to enforce the directive and warned that anyone who violates the restriction or engages in activities capable of threatening public peace would face appropriate lawful action.
The state government appealed to residents, traditional institutions, political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to remain calm and comply with the directive.
It further urged all parties to conduct themselves peacefully and lawfully as efforts continue to maintain public order across Kano State.
“The Government assures the people of Kano State that all necessary measures are being taken to protect lives and property and maintain peace and public order across the state,” the statement added.
