The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said he will not engage in personal attacks against President Bola Tinubu, stressing that he respects the office of the president.
Obi made the statement on Friday while speaking at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, held with the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
The former Anambra State governor said political differences should centre on policies, governance and performance rather than insults directed at individuals.
He maintained that he had never abused anyone in government and would continue to show respect to public office holders.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody,” Obi said.
He added, “Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect.”
However, Obi clarified that respecting the president and other public officials does not mean that their actions and decisions should not be questioned.
He said citizens and the media have the right to assess the performance of government officials and raise concerns about issues they consider important.
“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he stated.
Obi also urged political leaders to understand the influence their conduct has on society, saying those in positions of authority should demonstrate good values.
According to him, leaders should be prepared to have their records, statements and qualifications examined by the public.
“We must, because the leader… the character and behavior of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” Obi said.
