The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has issued a fresh directive banning police officers from engaging in unauthorized social media activities that could tarnish the image and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The directive was announced in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okonkon Edem Iniedu, who said the move was prompted by concerns over the growing number of police personnel creating videos, conducting live broadcasts, and posting content online while in uniform without official approval.

According to the police authorities, although social media remains a valuable platform for communication and public engagement, officers must operate within established regulations governing their conduct online.

“The use of social media by serving police officers must be guided by extant laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy,” the statement quoted the IGP as saying.

Disu warned that officers are prohibited from posting unauthorized content while dressed in police uniform, making public comments on official police matters, revealing sensitive operational information, or exploiting their status as law enforcement personnel for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.

To ensure strict compliance, the Inspector-General directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other senior officers to immediately educate personnel under their supervision and enforce the directive across all formations.

He further cautioned that supervisory officers would be held responsible for failing to address violations committed by officers under their command.

As part of the enforcement measures, the IGP instructed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers whose online activities fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Force.

Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism and discipline, Iniedu stated: “The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, while assuring members of the public of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust and institutional integrity.”

The latest directive underscores the Force’s determination to regulate the online conduct of its personnel and preserve public confidence in the institution.
