Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi are reportedly working toward a potential alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election, following their latest closed-door meeting on Thursday.

Peter Obi confirmed the meeting through a post on his X account, though specific details of their discussions were not disclosed publicly. Sources familiar with the engagement revealed that this represents the continuation of ongoing conversations between the two leaders regarding opposition coalition strategies for the next election cycle.

According to sources who spoke with Daily Trust, both political figures have recognized that they share similar voter bases and that separate campaigns could inadvertently facilitate an easy victory for incumbent President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The sources indicated that this was not the first such meeting between Jonathan and Obi, revealing that the pair have held three or four similar discussions since around Easter, though previous encounters were kept confidential. The central challenge in their negotiations appears to be determining which leader should step aside to allow the other to serve as the coalition’s presidential standard-bearer.

One source explained the strategic rationale behind their discussions, noting that Obi’s strongest support in 2023 came from southern Nigeria, particularly the South East and South South regions, as well as the traditional Middle Belt area that had been Jonathan’s political stronghold during his 2011 presidential victory.

The source emphasized that both leaders have concluded they cannot afford to approach the 2027 election independently, given their overlapping support bases and the mathematical implications for vote splitting.

Platform selection has emerged as another significant consideration in their deliberations. While Peoples Democratic Party leaders have been actively courting Jonathan to carry the party’s flag, he reportedly remains cautious about the PDP’s ongoing internal conflicts and is seeking assurances about party stability before making commitments.

Additional sources revealed concerns within Peter Obi’s camp about potential marginalization within any broader coalition arrangement. These supporters worry about being sidelined despite their role in building the opposition movement that emerged around Obi’s 2023 campaign.

The African Democratic Congress has been mentioned as a potential platform, though some within the Obidient Movement express skepticism about whether the party structure could effectively deliver on presidential ambitions rather than serving other political interests.

The meetings between Jonathan and Obi reflect broader opposition efforts to consolidate anti-incumbent sentiment ahead of 2027, though significant questions remain about leadership hierarchy, platform selection, and maintaining unity among diverse political constituencies that supported different candidates in 2023.
