The family of late President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed heartfelt appreciation to Nigerians and the international community for the overwhelming support and condolences received following the former leader’s recent passing.
Speaking on behalf of the Buhari family, Mamman Daura, the most senior family member, described the outpouring of love and solidarity from citizens across the country as a source of comfort during their period of grief.
In a statement issued through presidential aide Garba Shehu, Daura particularly acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, whose presence and support provided “deep comfort” to the bereaved family.
The family expressed gratitude for the extensive support network that emerged following the former president’s death, including members of the Federal Executive Council, National and State Assemblies, as well as current and former governors who either visited personally or sent messages of condolence.
Daura highlighted the meaningful presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who traveled to the United Kingdom and spent several days with the family during the mourning period, alongside various ministers. “These have instilled confidence in all of us to face this loss with courage,” he noted.
The family spokesman praised President Tinubu’s thoughtful gestures, including the declaration of a public holiday and the decision to rename the University of Maiduguri in honor of the late president.
International support also drew special recognition from the family. Daura specifically mentioned condolences received from King Charles III of England, the United Nations Secretary General, Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed, the African Union Chairman, ECOWAS heads of state, and former Nigerian Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar.
The family extended appreciation to former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, Yemi Osinbajo, and Babagana Kingibe, as well as National Assembly leaders including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas, and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.
Traditional rulers received particular mention, with Daura thanking the Sultan of Sokoto, Shehu of Borno, Emir of Gwandu, and various emirs from Katsina, Daura, and neighboring regions who participated in the mourning activities.
Business leaders who visited the family, including Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Isyaku Rabiu, Muhammadu Indimi, Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu, were also acknowledged for their support.
Daura concluded by thanking the entire Nigerian citizenry and international diplomatic missions, noting that “all of Nigeria came out in force” to honor Buhari and support the family. He requested continued prayers during this challenging period, expressing the family’s deep gratitude for the nationwide display of respect and sympathy.
