Biden Pardons Son Hunter in Controversial Last-Minute Move

In a dramatic turn of events, U.S. President Joe Biden on Sunday issued a full pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who was awaiting sentencing in two high-profile criminal cases.

The decision, which comes just weeks before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office on January 20, has reignited debates over the integrity of the U.S. justice system.

Hunter Biden faced a felony conviction for lying about his drug use during the purchase of a firearm and had also pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges earlier this year. While sentencing had not yet been scheduled, the pardon effectively halts any further legal proceedings against him.

In a statement justifying his decision, President Biden accused political opponents of exploiting his son’s legal troubles for partisan gain.

“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” Biden said. He went on to allege that the cases were politically motivated, describing the prosecutions as a “miscarriage of justice.”

The president, who had previously promised not to interfere with the Justice Department’s handling of his son’s legal matters, defended his reversal, citing what he called a “politicized” judicial process.

“I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I watched my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted,” Biden noted. “The charges only came about after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election.”

The timing of the pardon is significant, occurring as the Supreme Court recently ruled in favor of granting presidential immunity. This decision has stalled criminal cases against President-elect Trump, ensuring he will not face jail time for his conviction in May for falsifying business records.

Trump, who has vowed to overhaul the FBI and Justice Department by appointing loyalists to key positions, is set to inherit a justice system that critics say has become deeply polarized.

The pardon marks a contentious end to President Biden’s term, highlighting the intersection of personal and political dynamics in U.S. governance. With Trump preparing to take office, the move is expected to fuel further scrutiny of the nation’s legal and political systems.
