Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, has declared a 48-hour nationwide state of emergency, effective from 6:00 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Sunday, in response to pre-emptive military strikes conducted by Israel in Lebanon.

In his announcement, Gallant emphasized that the emergency measures empower the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to enforce specific directives aimed at protecting the public. These directives include restrictions on public gatherings and the closure of certain locations deemed at risk.

“There is a significant likelihood of an attack on the civilian population in regions where previous emergency measures were not in place,” Gallant stated, underscoring the need for the expanded declaration.

“I am hereby extending the special situation on the home front to additional areas across the country, effective for the next 48 hours.”

Gallant also briefed U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on the unfolding situation. In a separate statement from the Israeli defense ministry, Gallant explained that the recent strikes in Lebanon were a preemptive measure to neutralize an imminent threat against Israeli citizens.

“We have carried out precise strikes in Lebanon to prevent an immediate danger to the safety of our people,” Gallant informed Austin.

“We are closely monitoring the situation in Beirut, and we are resolute in our commitment to use all necessary means to protect our citizens.”

During their discussion, both Gallant and Austin stressed the importance of avoiding further escalation in the region, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and strategic coordination to maintain stability.
