Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has said Nigerians purchasing petrol at about ₦1,400 per litre are paying significantly less than motorists in the United Kingdom, where he claimed the equivalent price is above ₦3,000 per litre.
Okpebholo made the statement on Thursday, September 24, 2026, during the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State.
The governor said he had travelled to London the previous week, where he bought petrol and compared the price with what motorists pay in Nigeria.
“Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about N3,000-something for one litre of fuel,” Okpebholo said.
According to him, the comparison showed that petrol remained cheaper in Nigeria despite the recent increases in pump prices.
“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist,” he said.
Okpebholo’s comments come amid continued concerns over the cost of petrol and other essential commodities following the removal of the fuel subsidy and subsequent increases in pump prices.
The governor acknowledged that the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu had created difficulties for Nigerians but maintained that the measures would eventually deliver positive results.
“I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level. Nigeria will be on a cruising level,” he said.
