The national chairman of the Labour Party Nigeria, Nenadi Usman, has confirmed that the party has formally zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 election to southern Nigeria, effectively excluding aspirants from the northern region.
Speaking in Abuja, Usman said the decision had already been concluded internally and would be strictly enforced. She maintained that the party would not entertain any presidential ambition from the North, stressing that the zoning arrangement is final.
Despite clarifying the regional preference, Usman declined to endorse any individual, noting that the party remains committed to a transparent primary process. According to her, the eventual candidate will emerge through a democratic selection by party members rather than pre-determined endorsement.
On internal legal disputes, the party chairman disclosed that a court case challenging aspects of the party’s leadership had been dismissed. She described the ruling as a victory for the party, stating that the court found the case lacking in merit.
Usman also hinted at possible adjustments to the party’s congress timetable, citing a surge in membership. She warned that maintaining the current schedule could disenfranchise new entrants who are yet to be fully integrated into the system.
Addressing security concerns, she confirmed that the party had filed a petition with the Nigeria Police Force following an attack on one of its offices. She expressed confidence that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
In addition, the chairman urged members to adopt the party’s digital registration system, explaining that manual registration should be reserved for individuals without access to mobile technology.
