Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has dismissed reports suggesting that banditry is widespread in Nigeria’s capital city, insisting that the security situation in Abuja remains under control.
Speaking on Monday during an inspection of ongoing projects across the Federal Capital Territory, the minister acknowledged that criminal activities occasionally occur in the city but argued that claims of recurring banditry are exaggerated.
Wike maintained that Abuja is not experiencing banditry, stressing that security agencies are actively responding to incidents and working to keep residents safe.
According to him, crime exists in every major city across the world, and Abuja cannot be completely exempt from isolated criminal activities such as kidnapping.
The FCT minister noted that while a recent kidnapping incident occurred in the Bwari area, the victims were successfully rescued by security operatives.
He emphasized that security agencies in the territory have been diligent in addressing threats and preventing crimes, urging the public to recognise their efforts.
Wike also criticized the tendency to highlight isolated incidents without acknowledging the numerous crimes that security operatives prevent.
He called for greater support and appreciation for the security agencies, adding that continued cooperation would help further strengthen safety in the Federal Capital Territory.
The minister expressed confidence that security agencies would keep improving their operations to ensure the protection of residents and visitors in Abuja.
