Reports circulating in British media claim that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is in a coma after sustaining severe injuries during recent airstrikes.
According to the The Sun and the Daily Mail, Khamenei is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at Sina University Hospital, located in the historic quarter of the Iranian capital. Security forces have reportedly sealed off parts of the hospital as authorities attempt to restrict access to the facility.
Citing an unnamed source who spoke through an exiled dissident in London, the reports claim the cleric suffered devastating injuries in the strikes, including the loss of at least one leg and significant internal damage to either his liver or stomach.
The source alleged that Khamenei underwent emergency surgery and remains unconscious. “One or two of his legs have been cut off. His liver or stomach has also ruptured. He is apparently in a coma as well,” the source reportedly said.
The reports further claim that the Supreme Leader is being treated by Iran’s Health Minister, Mohammad Reza Zafargjani, who is described as one of the country’s leading trauma surgeons. Zafargjani is said to have gained extensive surgical experience during the Iran–Iraq War in the 1980s, where he reportedly spent eight years operating on wounded soldiers and was himself injured by chemical weapons during the conflict.
He is believed to be assisted by senior surgeon Mohammad Marashi, who is related by marriage to former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.
Reports also indicate that Iran’s current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, visited Khamenei in the hospital two days ago and is receiving regular updates about his condition.
Khamenei has not been seen publicly for several weeks, fueling speculation about his health. Meanwhile, reports suggest that regional commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are currently handling key state affairs as uncertainty surrounds the leader’s condition.
Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed the claims about the extent of Khamenei’s injuries or his reported coma.
