Former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is preparing to formally transfer leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to the newly appointed Acting IGP, Tunji Disu, following his resignation from office.
The handover ceremony, slated for 2:00 p.m. at the IGP Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, had not commenced as of the time this report was filed.
Egbetokun stepped down on Tuesday, citing family considerations. His resignation was promptly accepted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who subsequently approved the appointment of Disu in an acting capacity.
Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. His appointment marks a transition in the top hierarchy of the Nigeria Police Force, with eight senior Deputy Inspectors-General of Police—members of the Force Management Team—expected to proceed on compulsory retirement in accordance with established tradition.
On Wednesday, the Acting IGP arrived at the Presidential Villa ahead of his official decoration with the new rank. Disu arrived at about 2:50 p.m., accompanied by family members, for the ceremony to be performed by the President.
The development signals a significant leadership change within the Force, as Disu assumes responsibility at a time of heightened public scrutiny and evolving security challenges across the country.
