President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect.
Egbetokun tendered his resignation earlier on Tuesday, citing pressing family considerations. The President expressed appreciation for his “decades of distinguished service” to the Nigeria Police Force and the country, commending his professionalism and commitment to strengthening the nation’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term expected to run until June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President said the appointment of AIG Disu was made in view of the prevailing security challenges in the country and in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance.
Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s experience, operational depth, and leadership capacity, noting that he would provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time.
The President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council in compliance with the Police Act 2020 to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following the council’s deliberation, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency reiterated its commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
