The Nigerian Senate has initiated moves to increase funding for the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general elections, proposing an additional ₦30 billion to support the exercise.
The request was put forward by the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters as part of ongoing budgetary considerations for the polls. Lawmakers said the proposed increment is primarily aimed at addressing anticipated logistical challenges associated with organising a nationwide election.
The electoral body had earlier submitted a projected budget of about ₦873 billion for the 2027 general elections. However, senators are now seeking to augment that figure to ensure the commission is adequately equipped to manage operations across the country.
While specific breakdowns of the additional ₦30 billion have not yet been disclosed, the committee maintained that the extra funding would strengthen preparations and enhance the smooth conduct of the elections.
Further details are expected to emerge as deliberations continue.
