The United States has announced that its Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing, Jonathan Burke, will visit Nigeria from February 23 to 24 to advance bilateral cooperation on countering terrorist financing.
According to a media advisory issued by the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria’s Public Affairs Section in Abuja on February 22, 2026, the visit is part of ongoing efforts by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to work closely with Nigerian authorities on tackling financial flows linked to terrorism.
During his two-day trip, Burke is expected to engage with senior government officials and private sector stakeholders. Discussions will focus on identifying and mitigating risks within Nigeria’s financial system, as well as strengthening safeguards designed to prevent the misuse of financial institutions for terrorist activities.
The advisory stated that the engagement aligns with the current U.S. administration’s broader objective of reducing violence against Christians and other vulnerable groups by disrupting sources of terrorist funding.
The meetings are also expected to reinforce existing collaboration between both countries in the areas of financial intelligence, regulatory oversight, and enforcement mechanisms aimed at curbing illicit financial networks.
