The United States government has delivered critical military supplies to Nigeria as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s counterterrorism and internal security operations.
The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday, January 13, by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in a statement shared on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account. According to AFRICOM, the supplies were formally handed over to Nigerian authorities in Abuja.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership,” the command said, tagging the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
AFRICOM noted that the latest support highlights Washington’s continued commitment to deepening security cooperation with Nigeria amid persistent security challenges.
The assistance comes as Nigeria intensifies collaboration with international partners to combat terrorism and violent extremism, particularly in the North East and North West regions, which have remained hotspots of insurgent and bandit activity.
In November 2025, the administration of President Bola Tinubu formally requested direct military support from the United States to help address escalating insecurity in several parts of the country. The appeal was confirmed by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga while responding to the U.S. government’s decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
Subsequently, a joint air operation was carried out on December 25, 2025, in coordination with Nigerian authorities. The operation reportedly targeted terrorist enclaves in the North West as part of broader efforts to dismantle armed groups and restore stability.
The latest delivery of military supplies is expected to further enhance Nigeria’s operational capacity in its fight against terrorism and related security threats.
