Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has expressed deep sympathy to renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family following the death of their 21-month-old son, while disputing reports suggesting medical negligence in the handling of the child’s care.
In a statement issued on Friday, the hospital described the loss as “profound and unimaginable,” extending condolences to Adichie, her husband, and the wider family.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and family on the demise of their son and acknowledge the profound and unimaginable loss they are experiencing during this deeply distressing time,” the hospital said.
Euracare stated that some public reports surrounding the incident contain inaccuracies, stressing that the child was already critically ill before being brought to its facility.
According to the hospital, the patient had received treatment at two paediatric centres before being referred to Euracare specifically for diagnostic procedures.
“The patient, who was critically ill, was referred to our facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment for a period of time at two paediatric centres,” the statement noted.
The hospital explained that upon the child’s arrival, its medical team provided care in line with internationally accepted medical standards, including sedation where necessary.
“Our medical team immediately provided care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including the administration of sedation where clinically indicated,” Euracare said.
Euracare added that it worked closely with external medical professionals recommended by the family in an effort to stabilise the child.
“In the course of his care, we worked collaboratively with external medical teams as recommended by his family and ensured that all necessary clinical support was provided,” the statement said.
Despite these efforts, the hospital disclosed that the child passed away less than 24 hours after arriving at the facility.
The management confirmed that an internal investigation has since been launched in line with its clinical governance framework.
“We have commenced a detailed investigation consistent with our clinical governance standards and best practices, and we remain committed to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes,” the hospital stated.
While emphasising due process, Euracare said its immediate focus remains compassion, patient safety, and respect for the family’s privacy.
“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply. Our priority remains compassion, patient safety, and the responsible handling of this matter, while respecting the family’s privacy,” the statement added.
The hospital concluded by assuring the family of continued support during what it described as a devastating period.
“We shall continue to support them in any way that may bring comfort during this devastating period,” Euracare said.
The statement was signed by the management of Euracare Multispecialist Hospital.
