The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, following the transmission of allegations of gross misconduct by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule.
Amaewhule, in letters dated January 8, 2026, officially notified both the Governor and the Deputy Governor that he had received notices of allegations signed by 26 members of the House. The notices were originally dated January 5, 2026.
According to the Speaker, the 26 lawmakers constitute the required two-thirds majority of the Rivers State House of Assembly, in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, thereby meeting the constitutional threshold to initiate impeachment proceedings.
In the letter addressed to Governor Fubara, Amaewhule stated that the notice was submitted pursuant to Sections 188(1) and 188(2) of the Constitution and formally placed the Governor on notice of the allegations against him.
The Speaker further requested that Governor Fubara respond to the allegations within the timeframe prescribed by the Constitution, stressing that the process would be guided strictly by the provisions of Section 188.
A similar letter was sent to Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, who is also named in the allegations. Both officials are now required to submit their responses as part of the constitutional process that could lead to their impeachment.
