The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed speculations that any individual is guaranteed the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election, insisting that all aspirants will compete on equal footing.

The clarification comes amid growing political interest following the reported entry of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the party. While Atiku’s camp has not publicly confirmed his intentions, supporters of Obi have been vocal in asserting that the former Anambra State governor would not accept a subordinate role in any political arrangement.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party has not begun discussions on its presidential flag bearer or potential running mates, stressing that no automatic ticket exists for any aspirant.

Abdullahi explained that the party’s leadership is currently focused on strengthening its internal structures and building a broad-based political coalition, rather than zoning or anointing candidates. According to him, when the time comes, the party will first explore a consensus option that reflects collective agreement and the political realities ahead.

He added that should consensus prove unattainable, the ADC would conduct a competitive primary election that would be open, transparent and in strict compliance with party rules.

“There is no decision yet on who will carry the party’s flag in 2027,” Abdullahi said. “Every eligible member has the right to contest. If consensus fails, Nigerians will witness a credible and transparent primary process that reflects our commitment to internal democracy.”

The ADC spokesperson maintained that the party aims to distinguish itself as a rule-driven and accountable political platform, capable of presenting a credible alternative in the next general election.
