President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spoken by telephone with Nigerian-British boxing star and former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, following the tragic road accident that left the boxer injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.
The accident occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, triggering widespread concern across the country.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu disclosed that he personally called Joshua to express his condolences and to wish him a quick recovery.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” the President said.
Tinubu also revealed that he spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort. According to the President, she expressed deep appreciation for the gesture.
In addition, the President contacted Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who was present at the hospital attending to Joshua and others affected by the crash. Governor Abiodun assured Tinubu that everything necessary would be done to ensure the boxer receives optimal medical attention.
Earlier, President Tinubu had taken to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to express sympathy while currently abroad. He praised Joshua’s patriotism and resilience, describing him as a source of national pride.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country,” Tinubu wrote.
He further prayed for strength for Joshua and eternal rest for the deceased.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), alongside Ogun and Lagos State authorities, has confirmed that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. Officials said preliminary findings are being reviewed, while safety assessments of the affected section of the expressway are underway.
Anthony Joshua is reported to be in stable condition and responding to treatment, according to government sources, while arrangements are being made to support the families of the deceased associates.
The incident has continued to draw reactions nationwide, with sports figures, government officials, and fans expressing solidarity with the boxing champion during the difficult period.
