The Federal Government has announced the reopening of 47 Unity Schools across the country that were previously closed due to security challenges, the Federal Ministry of Education disclosed on Thursday.

The affected colleges, located in various parts of Nigeria, had been shut down over safety concerns for students and staff amid escalating insecurity in certain regions.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Education Ministry explained that the decision to reopen the schools demonstrates the government’s “unwavering commitment to safeguarding students and ensuring the continuity of education.”

The statement revealed that academic activities have fully resumed following significant improvements to security infrastructure at the affected institutions.

“After the strengthening of security architecture within and around the affected schools, academic activities have fully resumed. Students have returned safely to their campuses, with many currently concluding their December academic programmes, while others have successfully completed their examinations,” the ministry stated.

The government assured parents, guardians and the general public that the safety, welfare and well-being of students remain paramount priorities, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with security agencies to maintain stability across schools nationwide.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its responsibility to protect every Nigerian child and to uphold their fundamental right to education in a safe and secure environment,” the statement read.

The ministry highlighted the administration’s focus on human capital development, noting that education is recognized as a critical foundation for national progress.

“This administration places strong emphasis on human capital development and recognises education as a critical pillar for national growth and development. Accordingly, it remains determined to prevent any disruption to the academic calendar,” the statement declared.

The ministry emphasized that the safe return of students and successful completion of examinations in several unity colleges demonstrate the government’s determination to maintain uninterrupted learning despite prevailing security challenges.

Unity Schools, also known as Federal Government Colleges, were established to promote national unity by bringing together students from diverse ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds across Nigeria. The institutions are managed by the federal government and are located in all states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The reopening of these schools comes as the government continues efforts to address insecurity in various parts of the country, particularly in regions affected by banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence that have disrupted educational activities in recent years.

The closure of schools due to security concerns had raised concerns among parents and education stakeholders about the potential long-term impact on students’ academic progress and the broader implications for Nigeria’s education sector.
