Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced the launch of its free fuel distribution program beginning Monday, September 15, 2025, targeting Lagos, other South-West states, the Federal Capital Territory, and select states including Kwara, Delta, Rivers, and Edo.

Group spokesman Anthony Chiejina confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday, revealing that the initiative will be accompanied by reduced petrol pump prices across the designated areas.

According to the refinery’s announcement, petrol will be sold at ₦841 per litre in Lagos and South-West states, while residents of Abuja, Edo, Kwara, Rivers, and Delta states will pay ₦851 per litre. The price reduction will take effect simultaneously with the commencement of the free distribution scheme.

The program faced earlier delays after being initially scheduled to begin in August due to logistics challenges encountered in China. However, Chiejina indicated that the refinery has now resolved these issues and is prepared to proceed with the distribution plan.

To support the distribution exercise, the refinery has reportedly received over 1,000 trucks, with additional vehicles expected to arrive in Nigeria to facilitate expansion of the program to more states. The phased approach allows the company to gradually extend coverage as transportation capacity increases.

In a related development, Dangote disclosed its ambitious plan to deploy 10,000 Compressed Natural Gas-powered trucks this year as part of efforts to reduce logistics costs and strengthen domestic fuel distribution networks. The company emphasized that this initiative will proceed despite recent fluctuations in CNG pricing.

The refinery acknowledged recent price increases in the CNG market, noting that prices had doubled approximately one week ago. However, company officials stated that these market changes would not derail their planned large-scale CNG truck deployment for 2025.

The free fuel distribution program represents a significant development in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, potentially providing relief to consumers in the selected states while demonstrating the refinery’s operational capacity. The initiative comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with fuel supply challenges and pricing concerns across the country.

The strategic selection of states for the initial rollout appears to focus on major economic centers and oil-producing regions, potentially maximizing the program’s impact while testing distribution logistics before nationwide expansion.
