The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas has refuted claims circulating that the Federal Government directed nationwide changes to CNG pump prices, describing such reports as misleading and false.
Matilda Johnson, Brands and Corporate Communications Manager for P-CNGI, issued a clarification statement to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing that no government directive exists regarding CNG pricing adjustments. She stressed that the Federal Government remains committed to ensuring CNG stays significantly cheaper, cleaner, and more affordable compared to Premium Motor Spirit and diesel.
Johnson explained that recent pump price changes announced by some CNG operators were entirely private-sector decisions made independently, without any government influence or policy direction. She categorically denied reports suggesting the Federal Government had removed subsidies or increased CNG prices, calling such claims completely incorrect.
The P-CNGI spokesperson clarified that while pricing matters fall under the jurisdiction of appropriate regulatory agencies, the Federal Government has not issued any directive or policy to modify CNG pump prices across the country. She reiterated that President Bola Tinubu’s mandate for the initiative focuses on catalyzing the development of Nigeria’s CNG mobility market and promoting the adoption of this cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional fuels.
According to Johnson, the CNG sector has experienced remarkable enthusiasm and growth through collaborative efforts between relevant government agencies. The initiative’s primary objectives remain centered on expanding CNG penetration nationwide while encouraging greater private sector participation to ensure the fuel remains both available and affordable for all Nigerians.
The statement comes amid growing interest in alternative fuel sources as the country seeks to reduce dependence on traditional petroleum products while providing more cost-effective options for consumers and businesses.
