A passenger train traveling between Nigeria’s capital and Kaduna State left the tracks on Tuesday morning, prompting emergency response operations and drawing immediate attention from President Bola Tinubu, who is currently on a diplomatic mission in Brazil.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed that the derailment occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m. at kilometer 49, positioned between Kubwa Station and Asham Station along the busy Abuja-Kaduna corridor. The incident involved a Kaduna-bound service that was in regular operation when it left the rails.

NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa immediately activated emergency protocols following the derailment, coordinating the deployment of rescue teams and medical personnel to the accident site. The corporation also mobilized nearby hospitals to prepare for potential casualties from the incident.

Security forces were dispatched to the scene to establish safety perimeters and protect passengers during the rescue operation. The comprehensive emergency response demonstrates the serious nature of the incident and the importance of the affected railway corridor to Nigeria’s transportation network.

From Brasília, where he is conducting official state business, President Tinubu issued a statement expressing his concern for all those affected by the derailment. Using his official social media platform, the President conveyed his sympathy for passengers who experienced what he described as a traumatic incident.

“Even while in Brazil, I have received reports of today’s Abuja–Kaduna train derailment. I am deeply saddened by this incident,” Tinubu stated, demonstrating that his administration maintains close monitoring of domestic emergencies regardless of his international commitments.

The President specifically extended prayers and support to injured passengers and their families, while acknowledging the distressing nature of the experience for all travelers on board the affected train. His message emphasized the human impact of the transportation accident.

Tinubu indicated that he expects to receive detailed briefings about the incident to inform government response strategies. He assured the public that his administration would provide “swift action and support for all affected” individuals, suggesting that federal resources would be mobilized to assist victims.

The President praised the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s immediate response to the emergency, noting that the agency was “already addressing the situation.” He emphasized that the incident would prompt comprehensive efforts to strengthen railway safety measures and prevent similar occurrences.

“I am staying updated on the latest developments and await a full briefing to ensure swift action and support for all affected. The NRC is already addressing the situation, and necessary steps are expected to be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” the President’s statement concluded.

The derailment represents a significant disruption to one of Nigeria’s most important transportation links, connecting the federal capital with Kaduna State, a major northern commercial and administrative center. Thousands of passengers rely on this service daily for business, personal, and official travel.

This incident occurs amid ongoing efforts to modernize Nigeria’s railway infrastructure and improve transportation safety standards across the country. The Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor has been a flagship project in the government’s efforts to provide reliable mass transit options for Nigerian citizens.

The comprehensive emergency response coordinated by the NRC, including the immediate deployment of medical personnel and security operatives, reflects lessons learned from previous transportation incidents. The corporation’s swift activation of emergency protocols demonstrates improved preparedness for such situations.

As rescue operations continue and investigations into the derailment’s cause commence, the incident will likely prompt renewed discussions about railway infrastructure maintenance, safety protocols, and the resources required to ensure reliable passenger transportation services.
