Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been discharged from a London hospital and is currently recovering, according to his former media aide Garba Shehu.
The update comes amid widespread speculation about the 82-year-old’s health condition.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Shehu dismissed reports suggesting Buhari was in critical condition, describing such claims as exaggerated. He confirmed that while the former president was indeed hospitalized, his condition has now stabilized and he continues to improve daily.
“Buhari has been discharged. It was not as intense as reported,” Shehu stated. “He was hospitalised, and now he is being cared for. He is in a recovery mode. Each day, he gets better, but until it’s all over, you can’t say it is over.”
The former presidential spokesman emphasized that Buhari’s current health status is remarkably good for someone his age, noting that the ex-president actually appears healthier now than he did when he first assumed office in 2015. Shehu attributed this to Buhari’s commitment to maintaining healthy lifestyle habits throughout his post-presidency period.
According to Shehu, Buhari follows a strict fitness regimen at his farm in Daura, where he engages in rigorous walking sessions lasting an hour and a half, four times per week. This disciplined approach to physical fitness, combined with healthy eating habits, has contributed to his overall well-being in retirement.
Even during his recent stay in the United Kingdom, prior to falling ill, Buhari maintained his exercise routine. “Even in the UK, when he went for a medical check before he fell ill, he flooded the streets,” Shehu revealed, referring to the former president’s regular walking sessions.
The health update provides reassurance to Nigerians who have been concerned about their former leader’s condition following reports of his hospitalization in London. Shehu’s comments suggest that while Buhari did require medical attention, the situation was less severe than initially reported, and the former president is now on a steady path to recovery.
