The United States has significantly tightened visa restrictions for Nigerian citizens, announcing that most non-immigrant visas will now be limited to single-entry permits valid for just three months.
The US Embassy in Abuja disclosed the policy change in a press release issued Tuesday, stating that the new measures take effect immediately as part of updated reciprocal non-immigrant visa policies.
“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the embassy announced.
The embassy clarified that US non-immigrant visas issued to Nigerians before July 8, 2025, will maintain their current status and validity periods, meaning the restrictions only apply to new applications.
American officials emphasized that visa reciprocity remains a dynamic process subject to continuous review and potential modifications, including possible increases or decreases in permitted entries and validity duration.
The policy adjustment is linked to what the US describes as standard global criteria designed to protect American immigration system integrity, based on technical and security benchmarks.
Key requirements cited by the embassy include secure travel document issuance with verified traveler identities, effective visa overstay management measures, and information sharing regarding security and criminal records to ensure public safety.
The US Mission indicated it is actively collaborating with Nigerian authorities to help the country meet these established criteria.
“The U.S. Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” the embassy stated.
Despite the restrictions, American officials reaffirmed the value of the longstanding US-Nigeria relationship and commitment to expanding partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunities.
The embassy commended ongoing efforts by Nigerian immigration and security agencies to align with international best practices while acknowledging continued engagement with government officials to address remaining challenges.
Nigerian travelers have been advised to strictly adhere to visa terms and ensure their travel documents are authentic, accurate, and current.
