Military Convoy Ambushed on Borno-Yobe Road: Army Lieutenant and Six Others Killed

The Nigerian Army has announced a three-day mourning period to honor seventeen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during a fierce battle with terrorists in Niger State, with all military formations directed to fly flags at half-mast from June 25 to 27, 2025.

The fallen heroes lost their lives during an intense firefight that erupted when troops successfully disrupted a terrorist group attempting to transit through Bangi community in Mariga Local Government Area toward Kwatankoro forest. The encounter, which occurred on Tuesday night, lasted over three hours as soldiers engaged the criminals in what military officials described as a deadly confrontation.

Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed that the terrorists had planned a nighttime movement but were effectively intercepted by vigilant troops who engaged them in sustained combat. The military action successfully foiled what could have been a devastating attack on civilian communities in the area.

While the operation resulted in heavy casualties among the terrorist ranks, the exact number of eliminated criminals could not be immediately determined. However, the military confirmed that ten soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries during the encounter and are currently receiving medical treatment at a military facility.

The Army’s official statement expressed profound respect for the fallen soldiers, describing them as courageous heroes whose bravery and sacrifice exemplified the highest ideals of military service. The three-day mourning period serves as a solemn tribute to their unwavering dedication and valor in defending the nation against terrorist threats.

All Nigerian Army formations and units across the country have been instructed to observe the mourning period by flying the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast, demonstrating institutional solidarity and respect for the deceased personnel. The gesture underscores the military’s commitment to honoring those who pay the ultimate price in service to their country.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Niger State, where terrorist groups continue to pose significant threats to both military personnel and civilian populations. The area has witnessed increased militant activity in recent months, prompting intensified military operations to neutralize criminal elements operating in the region.

The Army extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen soldiers, promising that their sacrifice and dedication to national defense would be forever remembered and cherished by both the military institution and the Nigerian people.
