Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has declared his willingness to participate in any political alliance aimed at defeating President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, adding his voice to growing opposition efforts to unseat the current administration.

Lamido’s commitment comes amid reports of high-level discussions among prominent opposition figures to form a unified front against the ruling All Progressives Congress. The proposed coalition reportedly includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

During an interview on Arise Television, the veteran politician and PDP stalwart emphasized his determination to support any configuration designed to remove the current government from office, regardless of the specific framework or party structure involved.

“I am part of any arrangement, no matter its nomenclature, to remove this government of incompetence, insecurity, that is dividing Nigeria firmly between north and south, out of power. I will go into any arrangement for that purpose,” Lamido stated emphatically.

The former governor leveled serious accusations against the Tinubu administration, claiming it has systematically divided the country along ethnic boundaries while weaponizing state institutions to suppress opposition voices. Lamido argued that the current government prioritizes party interests over national welfare.

“I will be part of any arrangement, configuration if it is going to remove this government from power,” he reiterated, underscoring his commitment to opposition unity despite potential ideological or strategic differences among coalition partners.

Lamido’s criticism extended to what he characterized as the administration’s manipulation of state apparatus to control and intimidate political opponents. He suggested that government institutions have been compromised to serve partisan rather than national objectives.

The former governor’s statements reflect broader opposition sentiment that the 2027 election will require unprecedented coordination among anti-APC forces to present a viable challenge to President Tinubu’s anticipated re-election campaign. His willingness to set aside traditional party loyalties in favor of a broader coalition signals the seriousness with which opposition leaders view the upcoming electoral contest.

The emerging coalition discussions represent a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape, as prominent figures from different parties and regions appear increasingly willing to compromise on individual ambitions for collective opposition goals. However, the practical challenges of uniting diverse political personalities with varying ideologies and regional interests remain substantial.

Lamido’s position as a respected PDP elder and former governor adds considerable weight to the coalition effort, particularly given his influence within northern political circles. His participation could help bridge regional and party divides that have historically weakened opposition effectiveness against the ruling party.

The success of any such coalition will likely depend on the ability of participating leaders to negotiate acceptable power-sharing arrangements and present a unified policy platform that resonates with Nigerian voters across different regions and demographic groups.
