The Nigerian government has strongly refuted social media claims suggesting the closure of its embassy in Tehran, Iran, while revealing advanced negotiations with Armenia for the safe evacuation of stranded citizens.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa addressed the controversy in a Saturday statement, categorically denying reports that the diplomatic mission had abandoned Nigerian nationals amid the ongoing Iran-Israel tensions.
“The embassy in Tehran continues to function despite operational challenges,” Ebienfa clarified, explaining that staff members have transitioned to remote work arrangements due to security concerns in the Iranian capital.
The ministry emphasized that while routine embassy operations have been temporarily suspended because of intensified bombing activities in Tehran, the diplomatic facility remains actively engaged in protecting Nigerian interests and citizens’ welfare.
Armenian Cooperation Breakthrough
In a significant diplomatic development, Nigeria has successfully negotiated with Armenia to establish an evacuation corridor through Yerevan for citizens seeking to leave Iran safely. The arrangement emerged from high-level discussions between Nigerian Chargé d’Affaires Abdulrasheed Omar Lawal and Armenia’s Acting Director for Middle East and Africa, Levon Petrosyan.
The foreign ministry praised Armenia’s humanitarian response, describing it as a demonstration of international solidarity during crisis situations. Officials noted that the evacuation framework has progressed to advanced stages, offering hope to Nigerians concerned about their safety in the conflict zone.

“Nigeria deeply appreciates the willingness of Armenia to assist in ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens caught in the distressing situation,” the ministry statement declared, highlighting the collaborative spirit between the two nations.
