The Federal Government has initiated payments of N44,000 in minimum wage arrears to former National Youth Service Corps members, delivering on commitments made following the recent upward review of corps members’ monthly allowances.

The arrears payment represents the difference between the previous N33,000 monthly allowance and the new N77,000 rate, targeting former corps members who completed their service year before the enhanced allowance took effect. The government’s decision to pay these arrears demonstrates its commitment to ensuring equitable treatment for all recent NYSC participants, regardless of when they concluded their service.

Brigadier General Olakunle Akinyemi Nafiu, Director-General of the NYSC, has provided assurance that the government remains dedicated to clearing all outstanding payments to eligible former corps members. He explained that the payment process has been streamlined to ensure efficiency, with funds being transferred directly to the bank accounts of beneficiaries using existing records maintained by the scheme.

The new N77,000 monthly allowance, which officially commenced in March 2025, has been applied retroactively to benefit corps members who completed their service before the implementation date. This retroactive application ensures that recent graduates who participated in the national service program receive fair compensation aligned with current economic realities.

Several beneficiaries have taken to social media platform X to confirm receipt of their arrears payments, with many expressing appreciation for the government’s follow-through on its commitment. The positive responses from former corps members indicate that the payment process is proceeding smoothly and reaching intended recipients.

The NYSC arrears payment forms part of broader government efforts to address compensation disparities and ensure that recent participants in national programs receive adequate financial support. The initiative reflects recognition of the economic challenges facing young graduates and the importance of maintaining competitive allowances for national service participants.

Director-General Nafiu emphasized that the payment system has been designed to minimize delays and administrative bottlenecks, with the NYSC leveraging its existing database of corps members’ banking information to facilitate direct transfers. This approach eliminates the need for complex verification processes and ensures that eligible individuals receive their arrears without additional bureaucratic requirements.

The government’s decision to honor these arrears payments, despite fiscal constraints, underscores its commitment to supporting youth development and maintaining the integrity of the NYSC program. The payment represents a significant financial commitment, considering the large number of corps members who complete the program annually.

The arrears payment initiative is expected to boost confidence in government commitments among young Nigerians and may encourage greater participation in national service programs. The prompt resolution of these outstanding payments demonstrates improved financial management within government agencies responsible for youth programs.

Former corps members who believe they are eligible for the arrears but have not yet received payment are advised to contact NYSC offices for clarification on their payment status. The scheme has indicated that all eligible individuals will receive their arrears as funds continue to be released by the federal government.
