President Tinubu Calls for Unity and Dialogue Amidst Nationwide Protests

The Federal Government has launched a comprehensive emergency response operation following a devastating flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State, that has claimed several lives and displaced hundreds of families from their homes.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been fully briefed on the tragic incident and has ordered all relevant emergency and security agencies to intensify search and rescue operations in the affected areas. The disaster has resulted in the submergence of numerous residential buildings, forcing families to flee their homes as floodwaters overwhelmed the community.

Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris announced the government’s response in a statement issued on Friday, May 30, 2025, expressing the administration’s profound sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction of property. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragic event,” Idris said in the official statement.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is coordinating relief efforts in collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Niger State Government, working around the clock to provide urgent assistance to survivors. The federal response team has prioritized life-saving operations and the provision of immediate relief materials to displaced residents.

Idris commended the bravery of first responders and volunteers who are actively participating in the rescue operations despite personal risks. The minister urged residents in flood-affected areas to cooperate fully with emergency officials and comply with all evacuation directives to ensure their safety.

The government has called on the affected communities to remain calm and follow instructions from emergency management officials as rescue operations continue. Authorities are working to establish temporary shelters and provide essential supplies including food, water, and medical care to displaced families.

The Mokwa flood disaster adds to Nigeria’s ongoing challenges with seasonal flooding, which typically affects various parts of the country during the rainy season. The federal government has repeatedly emphasized the importance of early warning systems and community preparedness in mitigating the impact of such natural disasters.

As rescue operations continue, the government has assured citizens that no effort will be spared in providing relief to those affected by the disaster. The administration has extended its heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones in the flooding, emphasizing national solidarity during this difficult period.

Emergency officials are expected to provide further updates on the casualty figures and the extent of damage as assessment teams continue their work in the affected areas of Mokwa Local Government Area.
