Government Allocates ₦80 Billion for Unity Schools Renovation Nationwide

President Tinubu Calls for Unity and Dialogue Amidst Nationwide Protests

Nigeria’s Unity Schools are set to undergo significant transformation following a substantial financial commitment from the federal administration.

The government has earmarked ₦80 billion for comprehensive infrastructure upgrades across 100 Federal Government Colleges throughout the country.

This major investment was disclosed by Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, Minister of State for Education, during an unscheduled assessment visit to Federal Government College, Kano on Friday. The surprise inspection forms part of a broader ministerial initiative to evaluate facilities and operational standards in Unity Schools across various geopolitical zones.

“This funding represents our administration’s determination to revitalize these crucial educational institutions that have historically served as centers of academic excellence and national integration,” Professor Ahmad stated while addressing school administrators and staff members during her visit.

The minister explained that her unannounced appearance was strategically designed to observe authentic day-to-day operations without the usual preparations that typically accompany scheduled official visits. This approach, she noted, allowed for genuine assessment of infrastructure conditions, administrative effectiveness, and student welfare standards.

“Our objective is to gain firsthand insight into the actual teaching and learning environment while identifying areas requiring immediate intervention,” she remarked. “This direct engagement strengthens the collaborative relationship between policymakers and institutional leadership in addressing operational challenges and infrastructure deficiencies.”

According to the minister, the ₦80 billion allocation will prioritize modernizing classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, and recreational facilities across the Unity School network. The investment aims to create optimal learning environments that support educational excellence and student development.

Professor Ahmad also revealed plans for a comprehensive digital platform designed to enhance teacher professional development nationwide. “We are developing an innovative technological solution that will democratize access to training resources for educators regardless of geographic location,” she explained.

The digital initiative will enable teachers to access continuous professional development opportunities, instructional resources, and pedagogical innovations without physical travel constraints. “By investing in both physical infrastructure and human capacity development, we are taking a holistic approach to educational transformation,” the minister added.

Following her assessment at Federal Government College, Kano, the minister continued her inspection tour at Federal Government Girls’ College in Kazaure. These visits represent part of a systematic evaluation of Unity Schools intended to identify common challenges and institution-specific needs.

Education analysts note that this substantial funding injection comes amid growing concerns about deteriorating facilities in many Unity Schools, some of which were established over five decades ago and have experienced limited maintenance in recent years.

The minister emphasized that regular, unannounced inspections would continue as the ministry implements its comprehensive renovation strategy, ensuring that resources are properly utilized to achieve meaningful improvements in educational standards across all Federal Government Colleges.
