The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a complete lockdown across the Southeast on Friday, May 30, 2025, as part of its annual commemoration of Biafran heroes and heroines who lost their lives in the struggle for Biafra’s liberation.

In a statement released by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the day as a sacred memorial tagged Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day. He emphasized that the lockdown is a symbolic gesture to honour “the ultimate sacrifice” made by those who fought and died for the Biafra cause.

“The esteemed family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) informs Biafrans, supporters of Biafra, and advocates for Biafra freedom that May 30th, 2025, is now designated a public holiday and a lockdown throughout Biafra Land in honor and commemoration of Biafra heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice for our present existence,” the statement read.

Powerful urged all residents of the Southeast to observe the sit-at-home order, warning them to avoid public places to prevent confrontations with security forces.

“We recommend that everyone refrain from going outside and remain indoors in your homes on May 30th to steer clear of gunfire from the ethnic prejudice of the Nigerian Police and Military, who will be present on the streets of Biafra seeking any chance to unjustly shed the blood of innocent Biafrans,” he stated.

He further added, “If you decide to ignore this lockdown order, whatever occurs to you, please hold no one responsible.”

The IPOB spokesman said preparations for the memorial began on May 1 with radio broadcasts and media campaigns by IPOB’s media team. According to him, this year’s events will include lectures both locally and internationally to honour the memory of Biafra’s fallen.

Powerful reiterated that the lockdown applies to all individuals and transporters across Biafra Land. “All transporters must refrain from using the roads on Friday, May 30, 2025,” he said, stressing that the safety of the people remains the group’s top priority.

“This is an important day in our history, and IPOB is committed to ensuring our people remember their roots and the blood that was shed for our freedom,” he concluded.
