The Federal Government has rejected claims that President Bola Tinubu’s political appointments show favoritism towards the South-West region, labeling the allegations as baseless.
The controversy, which has sparked nationwide discussions, centers around accusations that President Tinubu’s recent appointments do not reflect Nigeria’s regional diversity. Critics argue that the president’s choices for key government positions disproportionately benefit the South-West, where he hails from.
Among those who have raised concerns is Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South. On Monday, Ndume criticized the administration for allegedly violating the federal character principle enshrined in Section 14(3) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which mandates equitable representation from all regions in government positions.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), dismissed the allegations as “unfounded speculations.” Imohiosen asserted that the appointments made by President Tinubu are fully in line with the federal character principle.
“The president is committed to ensuring fairness and justice in his appointments,” Imohiosen stated. “This administration is determined to maintain Nigeria’s unity and ensure that all regions and demographic groups are fairly represented in the country’s institutions and government agencies.”
The OSGF statement urged Nigerians to disregard the criticisms, advising the public to rely on official sources for accurate information. “We encourage the public to reject baseless rumors and continue supporting the government’s efforts to create a prosperous, united, and equitable Nigeria, as outlined in the Renewed Hope agenda,” the statement read.
Imohiosen further criticized those fostering divisive rhetoric, calling out individuals who he said were “stoking the flames of hate and disunity.” He urged Nigerians to address any concerns through the appropriate government channels rather than giving attention to such claims.
The presidency insists that the government’s approach to governance remains inclusive and constitutionally compliant, despite mounting scrutiny regarding the regional balance in federal appointments.
