Oluremi Tinubu Speaks on Akpabio’s Alleged Sexual Harassment Scandal

Oluremi Tinubu Blames Media and Religious Messages for Promoting ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ Mentality

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who has been accused of sexual harassment by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The allegations, which have sparked public debate, stem from a heated exchange between the two lawmakers on February 20 over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber.

Following their altercation, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that her issues with Akpabio began after she rejected his alleged sexual advances. In response, she filed a formal petition with the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, seeking redress. However, the committee declined to entertain the petition, citing procedural and legal limitations.

Amid the controversy, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has weighed in, expressing confidence that the Senate is handling the matter appropriately. She stated, “I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I have not taken a position. I believe that the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is.”

Mrs. Tinubu also emphasized the need for decorum and mutual respect within the legislative chamber. “We shouldn’t be hearing things like that. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honor for you to be in that place alone,” she said.

Drawing from her own experience as a former senator, she urged women to uphold their dignity and assert themselves in professional spaces. “I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days, and I’m still trying to look young. People compliment you all the time. Women, raise yourself; don’t be in a position where men will be talking to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start,” she advised.

Mrs. Tinubu also took the opportunity to encourage Nigerian youths, particularly women, to continue striving for excellence and to hold their heads high despite challenges. She acknowledged the progress made by women in various fields and urged them to keep pushing boundaries.

The allegations against Senate President Akpabio have fueled widespread reactions, with many calling for a thorough investigation to uphold accountability and protect the integrity of the Senate. However, with the Ethics Committee’s dismissal of the petition, it remains uncertain whether further action will be taken on the matter.
