Legal proceedings at the Imo State High Court in Owerri came to an abrupt halt on Friday after over twenty lawyers and court staff evacuated a three-story building within the court premises over safety concerns.
The affected building, reportedly constructed during the administration of former Governor Rochas Okorocha, allegedly exhibited noticeable vibrations, sparking fears of a possible structural failure. Eyewitnesses recounted how the vibrations intensified during court sessions, leading to immediate evacuation to prevent potential danger.
“The entire building was shaking while court was in session. We could feel the floor trembling under our feet,” a lawyer who requested anonymity told The Nation. “No one wanted to take chances, so we all rushed out to safety.”
Another court staff member corroborated the claim, saying, “We were hearing strange sounds, and the movement of the structure was becoming more pronounced. It was alarming.”
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the situation. However, concerned legal practitioners and staff are urging the government to conduct urgent structural assessments to ascertain the integrity of the building and ensure the safety of court users.
“We cannot continue to work in fear. The relevant authorities must act swiftly to prevent a potential tragedy,” a senior lawyer emphasized.
As of press time, no casualties have been reported, but activities within the affected building remain suspended pending further evaluations.
