President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to the Nigerian military over the loss of six soldiers during a terrorist attack on an army base in Sabon Gida, Damboa, Borno State.
The dawn attack, which occurred on January 4, 2025, has been described as a tragic and painful loss for the nation.
In a press statement issued by the Presidency, Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice in defense of the country.
“Their sacrifice in defending our nation will forever be honoured and remembered. On behalf of a grateful nation, I extend heartfelt gratitude and sympathy to their families,” the President said.
Tinubu called for a thorough investigation into the attack, emphasizing the need to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident to prevent future occurrences.
Despite the tragic loss, the President praised the armed forces for their prompt and effective response. According to him, the military’s air component launched decisive retaliatory strikes, neutralizing a significant number of the fleeing terrorists and destroying their assets.
“This resolute action by the Army demonstrates the capability and readiness of our military to confront and defeat threats to our nation’s security, their actions testify to our resolve to eradicate terrorism and banditry, paving the way for a future where peace and security prevail for all Nigerians.” Tinubu said.
Tinubu also urged the military to intensify efforts to take the war to the camps of bandits and terrorists, particularly in the Northwest, where communities continue to face attacks.
“The military must remain proactive and take the fight to the enemy,” he added, stressing that such measures are essential to restoring normalcy and safeguarding the lives and properties of innocent Nigerians.
The President further called on Nigerians and the media to support the military’s efforts in ensuring peace and security across the country.
“Your sacrifices and dedication do not go unnoticed,” he assured the armed forces. “We stand firmly behind you in this ongoing fight to eliminate these threats.”
The attack and the military’s response highlight the continuing security challenges in parts of the country, but Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to decisively addressing these threats to achieve lasting peace.
