Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has recounted a candid conversation with President Bola Tinubu regarding the state of Nigeria’s economy, which was inherited from the previous administration.

Speaking at his 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme held at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium in Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio described the economy as being “on life support” when Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

According to Akpabio, President Tinubu expressed surprise at the dire economic situation, saying, “Small president, I must tell you, I didn’t know it was this bad.” The Senate President assured the audience that Tinubu’s track record as Lagos State governor provides hope that he will overcome the nation’s current economic challenges. You did it in Lagos, and you will do it again for Nigeria. It’s just a matter of time. We are praying for you, and God will grant you the wisdom to lead us to El Dorado,” Akpabio stated.

Akpabio, who represents the Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District, urged Nigerians, especially the people of Akwa Ibom State, to continue supporting the president as he implements reforms aimed at addressing the nation’s economic woes. He acknowledged that while these reforms may be painful, they are necessary for sustainable growth.

At the event, Akpabio also emphasized the importance of using empowerment tools provided through the programme to uplift families economically, rather than selling them. “We have enough foodstuff to distribute; there should be no stampede. These items are being extended beyond Ikot Ekpene to other senatorial districts in the state,” he said.

He further expressed gratitude for the support received from the people, noting that their encouragement inspires excellence and continued efforts to improve lives. “Your support has not only enhanced our educational experience but also inspired us to strive for excellence. Thank you for your unwavering support,” Akpabio added.

The Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme highlighted the Senate President’s commitment to fostering economic and social development in Akwa Ibom State, while also underscoring the urgent need for collective action to support national recovery efforts.
