The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, has cautioned corps members against night travel and boarding vehicles by the roadside, emphasizing the need for their safety during the service year.

General Ahmed issued the warning on Friday while addressing corps members at the Anambra State Orientation Camp in Mbaukwu and the Ebonyi State Orientation Camp in Afikpo.

He urged the corps members to prioritize their safety, stating, “Avoid night traveling because of its dangers. Don’t board vehicles by the roadside; always ensure you go to designated motor parks to board vehicles while traveling.”

The NYSC DG also advised corps members to seek permission from the NYSC and their employers if traveling becomes necessary, stressing the importance of adhering to rules to avoid risks.

Beyond safety, Brigadier General Ahmed encouraged corps members to actively engage in community development projects that would uplift their host communities. “Study the needs of your host communities, seek support from the residents, and initiate laudable projects that will improve their standards of living,” he said.

Highlighting the core purpose of the NYSC scheme, the DG called on the corps members to use the service year as an opportunity to build enduring friendships and promote national unity. He said, “Foster long-lasting relationships that will bond you together as agents of national integration. This is the essence of the NYSC.”

He also urged them to avoid social delinquency and use the service year to lay the foundation for a successful future. “Plan for a better future and steer clear of anything that could jeopardize your progress,” he advised.

The NYSC Director General’s visit forms part of his efforts to encourage corps members to embrace the values of service, safety, and nation-building during their mandatory one-year program.
