The Federal Government has raised an alert over the detection of a new COVID-19 variant, XEC, which has reportedly spread to 29 countries, including Australia.

The Ministry of Health has urged hospitals across the nation to activate their alert systems and increase vigilance for patients presenting COVID-like symptoms.

In a letter dated 5th December 2024, addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors, the Federal Ministry of Health highlighted the potential public health impact of the XEC variant. Signed by Dr. O. N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, the letter conveyed the directives on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.

“I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health,” the letter stated.

The ministry instructed hospitals to remain alert and ensure timely identification of potential cases. “Alert systems should be immediately activated throughout our hospitals for a high index of suspicion in patients with COVID-like symptoms,” it added.

The Federal Government also called for collaboration among key stakeholders to combat the potential threat posed by the variant. “We request your Committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols. Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be vital for effective response strategies,” the letter emphasized.

This directive comes amidst growing global concerns over the XEC variant, which is believed to have a competitive advantage over other circulating COVID-19 strains. The Ministry of Health assured healthcare providers of its continued support in combating the new threat.

The Permanent Secretary, through Dr. Anuma, conveyed the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety and urged all medical professionals to remain vigilant. “Please accept, as always, the assurances of the Permanent Secretary’s warm regards,” the letter concluded.
