Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has urged African nations to treat visiting football teams with the utmost respect and dignity.
This appeal follows a concerning incident involving Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, who were reportedly held for several hours at a Libyan airport after their flight was unexpectedly diverted.
In response to the situation, CAF has launched an investigation to uncover the details surrounding the incident, with results anticipated to be released to the public shortly.
Motsepe addressed the issue, affirming that the investigation is active and that CAF will implement necessary measures depending on its findings. He firmly stated that CAF will not tolerate actions that compromise the integrity of sportsmanship and the spirit of the game.
He remarked, “We have witnessed a decline in sportsmanship, and I want to reiterate our pride in those nations that honor visiting teams and clubs with the respect and dignity they deserve, treating them as they would wish to be treated in return.”
Motsepe further emphasized that CAF is reviewing relevant regulations and reiterated the importance of sportsmanship. He stressed that when national teams or football clubs come to visit, they should be treated with the dignity and respect they warrant. He added that violations of these principles would prompt CAF to take appropriate actions.
